The long-awaited traditional Jewish deli opens by Sunday

Jason Shugarman, founder of Maven’s Delicatessen, said the much-anticipated opening of the Pawtucket deli has been pushed back a few days.

Maven’s Deli claims to be the first Jewish deli of its kind in Rhode Island.

Monday was a busy day for the team as they offered free baked treats on their opening day.

“I don’t want to open before we’re ready, and this Sunday, we’ll be ready,” Sugarman said.

The deli is located inside Blackstone Square on East Street in Pawtucket, next to Celebration and Vettel.

Everything is made from scratch, said executive chef and bakery manager Scott Taylor.

“The rye bread is made fresh daily with sourdough. The carrot cake will be the staple here. It’s absolutely fantastic,” Taylor said.

Culinary director and partner Jaime D’Oliveira said making everything from scratch isn’t an easy process, but it’s worth it.

“It’s been very challenging, but we think that’s what defines us,” D’Oliveira said. “We’ve spent a lot of time building a facility, menu engineering, and a lot of passion.”

The deli can seat 100 people and is open seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Locals like Hrant and Carol Tatian didn’t have the full lunch that was expected on Monday, but they left with baked goods and a look inside the deli.

“We’ll come when they’re fully open,” Hrant said.

NBC 10 asked them about receiving sweets and treats.

“Well that was pretty good,” Carol said.

Locals Doreen and Linda Doran also appreciated Dushanbe’s deli and lodging.

“It’s always great to see new establishments coming into the area,” says Linda.

Maven’s offers handcrafted meats, freshly made Reuben sandwiches, corned beef, matzo ball soup and more.

General Manager Sarah Berman implemented NBC 10 programming into the layout.

“We have a self-serve cafe here and then here in the center we have our full-service dining area,” Berman said.

The Maven team says they are not “Kosher Certified” but “Delicious Certified”.

The team said their prices are fair considering the market and the labor-intensive nature of food preparation.

For example, a pastrami sandwich on fresh bread, with half a pound of meat and a drink will cost you about $18.

The Maven team said that every detail matters here, and they have special privileges for adults and children when you enter.

The deli will have daily newspapers for locals to read and chat with, along with free comic books and mini cookies for kids who order a kid’s meal.

“Comic books are for kids because I grew up with ADD and dyslexia and they helped me a lot with learning how to read and everything else,” Sugarman said.

Maven’s has a saying written on their wall along with murals of diners in a classic diner.

This quote says, “There are two types of people in this world, those who love deli and those you shouldn’t hang out with.”

They hope you love delis.

“I think what we’ve created here, what we’ve all created here, is very unique,” Sugarman said.

They plan to open at 7 a.m. this Sunday.

This menu is not yet available online, but will be available soon.
