New Family Support Services program offering peer support for mental health, addictions and trauma recovery

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Sometimes life can take us on a journey we didn’t expect. But one Roanoke nonprofit offers resources many may not know about.

From child therapy to domestic violence groups, Family Service of Roanoke Valley offers a range of programs for those seeking help. But Bryan Maiden, a certified peer recovery specialist, says the organization saw a growing need in the community for individuals struggling with mental health, substance abuse and trauma recovery, leading to the non-profit organization to create its new family support service.

We just wanted to make sure that there’s a program here for someone who, if they need help, if they need to talk to someone, need some advice and maybe settle down objectives. Do I qualify for Medicaid? Can I get Medicaid? Can I benefit from housing assistance? Are these things available to me? So we can help guide them down that path and just be there as advocates for them through that process, Maiden said.

Maiden said the addition of the family support service will give people a wider range of accessible resources.

We can talk to parents who may be having problems with their children. Or a family member or an individual themselves. It often happens that family members are in difficulty. They don’t know how to guide their child or what types of resources are available for their children. This way, we can help them achieve the goals they want to achieve. It’s just about presenting them with the option and letting them choose for themselves, Maiden said.

The goal? Provide peer support, education and encouragement.

I think it also helps to have live experience, as that is what our peer program is all about. All of us here have overcome something. Whether it’s an addiction, PTSD, or some sort of trauma. So you just need to have someone to talk to who you know has been through a similar situation. I think it’s a lot easier for them to open up and discuss these things, Maiden said.

Maiden said it’s important to note that all of their peers are certified peer recovery specialists and are registered with the state, meaning the organization can bill Medicaid for those looking to take that route .
