What is your maximum? Man approaches strangers on Sentosa beach with rewarding pull-up challenge

Pull-up is a familiar exercise for most Singaporeans, considering that pull-up bars are a common fixture in neighborhood gyms.

Working several important muscles at once, push-ups have established a place in almost everyone’s exercise regimen.

So, microphone in hand, Samuel Kwan approached strangers at Tanjong Beach Club in Sentosa asking a simple question.

“How many push-ups can you do?”

He would then ask them to prove it by finding a nearby overhead bar.

We might wonder why a stranger would agree to participate in your challenge. What’s in it for them?

Samuel’s promise was that he would give participants $1 for each push-up completed.

Last Sunday (October 15), he posted a 55-second clip on TikTok of an attempt by an Officer Cadet School (OCS) cadet, known as Ethan.

Ethan claimed he could do 10 push-ups, but Samuel wasn’t having it. He had a feeling Ethan could probably do a few more.

Samuel then upped the ante, saying, “I will buy any girl here a drink of your choice if you can do more than 20 push-ups.”

This offer did not interest Ethan and he opted for the cash reward.

On the chin-up, it didn’t take long to realize that Ethan was actually being modest at first.

He easily breezed through 10 push-ups, even chatting with Samuel while attempting the challenge.

“Oh my God, I’m broke. I’m not even looking, I trust his form”, admitted Samuel.

While many may have exaggerated their push-up count, Ethan did just the opposite when he completed 23 push-ups.

In a more recent TikTok video, Samuel met a Muay Thai fighter named Angus.

Samuel initially asked a group of beachgoers to suggest that his friend Angus try the challenge.

Walking up to the hanging bar, Samuel learned of Angus’ impressive 8-0 record as a Muay Thai fighter (six of those by knockout).

The pair joked that if Samuel didn’t pay he would also be knocked out.

With a group of fans cheering him on, Angus managed to complete 21 push-ups. This is impressive, as he claimed to be someone who “doesn’t usually do push-ups.”

Improving your pull-up game

If you’re feeling a little discouraged by how “easy” pushups can seem to some, don’t worry.

This strengthening exercise is no easy task. After all, you are lifting your entire body weight vertically against gravity.

The digital publication Men’s Health suggests doing a few exercises three times a week, and your pull-up game will improve over time.

Static retention is quite simple. All you have to do is jump into the starting position of a push-up and hold it there for as long as you can.

Try to hold for 20 seconds and don’t forget to contract your back muscles.

You can also try a negative pull-up. It works in a similar way, jump to the starting position, but this time lower yourself slowly.

Three sets of five and you’re good.

There are no promises that you will achieve pull-up numbers like Ethan or Angus, but that doesn’t matter, right? Everyone is on their own fitness journey.
