Over the next eight years, health care’s share of the U.S. economy is expected to grow from 17.4 percent to 20 percent, which Patti and Allan Herbert Business School at the University of Miami an essential step for healthcare clinicians, business leaders, policy makers and healthcare enthusiasts, all looking to stay ahead of the curve.

The healthcare sector lands squarely in Miami Herberts’ wheelhouse, thanks to its Executive MBA in Health Management and Policy and his Master in Health Administration programs, both considered among the best in the country. Illustrious Miami professor Herbert includes Alex Azar, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, who shares his nuanced understanding of health care’s impact on business during a course on health care policy that he teaches.

We are one of the few programs with quadruple accreditation, AMBA, EQUIS, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education ( CAHME).

I can count on one hand the number of programs that have achieved AACSB and CAHME, added Ullmann, a Miami Herbert business professor since 1979.

As more doctors and nurses need help navigating the regulatory, legal and financial maze of modern health care, more are turning to Miami Herberts. Executive MBA in Health Management and Policy And Master in Health Administration programs for a helping hand.

In 1979, if a clinician was looking to earn a master’s degree in health care, it meant a lot, Ullmann said. Now, I would say about half of the students are clinicians. Other participants in the program are from various fields of healthcare, such as the insurance sector and the hospital sector.

Miami Herberts 21 months Executive MBA in Health Management and Policy is one of the longest-running programs of its kind in the country, giving graduates the opportunity to connect with an accomplished alumni network of more than 1,000 people.

Although Azar and Ullmann are particularly gifted at analyzing the vast political, regulatory and economic ramifications of health care, they have never had a patient under their care. Fortunately, Danielle Ellerbe, academic director of the Master of Health Administration program at Miami Herberts, is able to share the perspectives of a bedside clinician.

I teach Essentials of Health Administration and Decision Making in Health and Medicine, both of which are graduate courses, said Ellerbe, who holds a doctorate in nursing practice from Johns Hopkins University, worked as an acute care nurse at Boston Medical Center, and also teaches at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies.

Ellerbe never allows his master’s in health care administration students to view patients simply as a source of revenue. There is a human attached to the decisions you make, Ellerbe constantly reminds students. I start every first semester class with a video and a short lecture about how the healthcare industry is a sacred place. because we are responsible for managing people’s lives and well-being.

“I am very proud of our cohort and I think they are very representative of our (Miami) population as a whole,” Ellerbe continued. This is approximately 50 percent male, 50 percent female, 50 percent working students, and 50 percent direct undergraduate students. Additionally, around 50 percent are foreign-born or first generation. This composition lends itself incredibly effectively to learning from a variety of perspectives, professionally and personally.
