I wanted to work with my hands; Staten Islander Sees Success With First Chiropractic Practice

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Born into a long line of New York City blue-collar workers, Dr. Joseph J. Ribertelli wanted a job where he could work with his hands.

But instead of using his hands like many in his family do to build careers with the city sanitation department, the Teamsters and the carpenters, Ribertelli had a different idea.

My father and grandfather were oil tank technicians/craftsmen for residences throughout the five boroughs. Working with my hands is all I’ve ever known, he said, noting that he had always been intrigued by science and so chose to pursue a career as a chiropractor.

I loved still being able to do that. [work with his hands] while helping people with health matters, Ribertelli added. I have always been intrigued by the relationship between structure and function. Why does something work like this? What are the biomechanics required for a person to perform a simple arm flexion?

With the help of his family, Ribertelli was able to realize his dream of opening his own practice, Core Chiropractic PLLC, in Dongan Hills in June.

There was a big opportunity at the time, said Ribertelli, who previously worked at another Staten Island chiropractic office.

I have been fortunate to receive both encouragement and support from my and my wife’s family, especially my father-in-law, Sal Basso. I am extremely grateful for all the hard work he has put into this as well, he added.

OFFERED SERVICES

Core Chiropractic, which is equipped with a private gymnasium/fitness center, offers chiropractic care consisting of manual therapy and soft tissue mobilizations, as well as physical therapy and therapeutic exercises, Ribertelli said. Other services provided on site are infrared therapy, compression therapy and custom orthotics.

Chiropractic is definitely prevention [measure]. This is ideal for maintenance if you have an active injury; It’s great to avoid surgery, Ribertelli said. I try to be as attentive and observant at all times when working with a patient. I do my best to be pleasant and make the patient feel as comfortable as possible.

He said a popular service offered is infrared therapy.

There is new research that indicates that [infrared therapy] is really excellent for cardiovascular health. It’s actually a sauna. But the heat comes from infrared lights, not steam like in a traditional sauna. New research indicates that about 30 to 45 minutes a day, three times a week, is beneficial for cardiovascular health, he said.

As for his favorite part of the job, Ribertelli said, is getting the patient back to their best self.

Whether it’s decreasing pain, restoring range of motion or preventing surgery, I like to see positive patient progression, he said.
